Earth Colors: 東地和生美術監督作品集
This book was published as a kind of catalogue for P.A. Works’ art director Kazuki Higashiji (東地和生)’s solo exhibition in 2017. It’s limited and brief availability at the exhibition venue and on P.A. Work’s online shop makes it a much coveted collectible today.
This picture book covers finished background arts supervised by Higashiji from 2010 to 2015, including those used in:
- 『Angel Beats!』(2010);
- 『Hanasaku Iroha』(2011, 2013);
- 『TARI TARI』(2012);
- 『Nagi no Asukara』(2013-2014);
- 『Charlotte』(2015).
『Nagi no Asukara』certainly marks Higashiji’s career, as the background images for this anime alone count for 64 pages, nearly half of the book.
Typically, there is one background image per page, except on p.169 where 3 shots of the same locations with different lighting conditions are juxtaposed on the same page.
When flipping through this large-sized (A4) hardcover book that lays flat, readers will notice that some characters were not removed on a number of background images. This is likely purposely done, for HIgashiji once said that his background art is not merely a visual representation of the fictional world, but also of the character’s inner world.
This book is cleanly printed and beautifully bounded, encased inside a transparent slip case on which the title of the book is printed.
