Screenwriter Mari Okada made her directorial debut in 2018 with『Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms』, which is also the first and to date the only standalone feature-length theatrical production of P.A. Works. For this feature film, P.A. Works collaborated with the publisher Genkosha (玄光社) to publish the artbook and the background artbook, while it handled by itself the publication of 3 volumes of keyframe animations drawn by Toshiyuki Inoue (井上俊之).
This artbook of nearly 200 pages devotes 129 pages to character design. Major and minor characters are included in details, with emphasis on facial expression and body-length design in different outfits from early sketch to final concept.
Since there exists a separate background artbook for this film, this artbook only devotes 39 pages to environment design. In this section, readers will find colour and black and white concept art for the fantasy world of the film. The last section on prop design only consists of 15 pages. It includes the dragons, weapons, vehicles, and other props used in the production.
Images in this artbook are generally sufficiently large, barren a few exceptions in the prop section where things are printed in small size.
